  • Week of one year tornado anniversary events planned

  • There will be several events happening this week in observance of the one year anniversary of the Feb. 29, 2012, tornado.
    There are two events Wednesday.
    Kiwanis Club
    At noon Wednesday at Harrisburg Ponderosa the Kiwanis Club will hold a tribute and hope to have available a DVD and CD with the song “We Are Here” performed by Rhonda Belford available.
    SIC vigil
    At 6 p.m. Wednesday Southeastern Illinois College Student Government will host a Leap Day Memorial Candlelight Vigil on the SIC Student Center Patio. This vigil is a memorial tribute to the lives lost and those affected by the Leap Day Tornado. Harrisburg Mayor Eric Gregg and Ridgway Mayor Becky Mitchell will speak. In the event of inclement weather, the vigil will take place on March 6.
    City of Harrisburg
    The City of Harrisburg at 2 p.m. Friday, March 1 will hold a dedication of the Tornado Memorial on property of Old National Bank on Rollie Moore Drive. On that day the city will hold a moment of silence at 10 a.m. and the flags will be flown half mast all day. At the dedication clergy will open and close the event and speakers will include victim family members, Mayor Eric Gregg and other officials.
    Village of Ridgway
    Ridgway holds a Tornado Recovery event 6 p.m. at the former St. Joseph — now St. Kateri — gymnasium at Combs Street at Edwards Street. Registration and food will begin at 6 p.m. followed by a recognition and appreciation at 7 p.m. A slide show of the tornado damage will follow.
    Ministerial Alliance
    At 6 p.m. Sunday the Harrisburg Ministerial Alliance hosts an area-wide memorial service at Davenport Gym at Harrisburg High School. The service will be non-denominational and all are invited. For details you may call (618) 252-7491.
