An explosion in the paint booth at the Caterpillar Global Mining manufacturing building at the Saline/Williamson County line Monday morning caused burn injuries to a worker there.
The identity of the worker is not being released at this time, Williamson County Rural Fire Protection District Chief Jeremy Norris said.
The Illinois State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating.
Norris said the building actually sits on the line between Saline and Williamson counties with part of the building within Carrier Mills fire district and part in Williamson County Rural Fire Protection District on property of the old Amax mine off Old Route 13. Both departments responded. Williamson County was dispatched at 8:19 a.m.
“The paint booth was on fire and one patient was burned as a result of the explosion and fire,” Norris said.
Once the ambulance crew arrived to prepare the victim to be air lifted, firefighters concentrated on the fire.
“The paint booth was a complete loss and it adjoined another structure that had fire damage also,” Norris said.
Caterpillar Global Mining bought the Bucyrus operation that had used the building since the early 2000s, Norris said.
