  • Eldorado overcame a huge first-quarter deficit and defeated Johnston City 101-100 in four overtimes Saturday night during the highest scoring game in the West Frankfort Mid-Winter Classic's history.
Tyler Deaton scored 35 points and Joel Boulds had 25 for the Eagles, who trailed 21-8 after the opening eight minutes but were down just 31-29 at the half thanks to 11 points by Deaton in the second quarter.
Deaton also made the Mid Winter All Tournament team, joining Carterville's Matt Galik, Tyler Horn and Michael Ashmann, along with Goreville's Dayton Tripp, Zeke Snell (MVP) and Alex Andros.
Also making the team was Austin McPheron (Johnston City), Justin Lukens (Herrin), Quentin Bent (Vienna), Braxton Koehl (West Frankfort) and Anna-Jonesboro's Noah Fuller.
Derek Mitchell added 13 points and Richard Graceffa had 11 for Eldorado, which made 20 of 27 free throws, including 11 of 13 in the four overtimes.
Brennan Unthank chipped in with seven points, while Dylan Lawrence had six points and Dillion Street finished with four points.
In the overtime sessions, Deaton had 10 points, while Boulds, Mitchell and Graceffa all had six points.
Austin McPheron led Johnston City (9-11) with 31 points. Hunter Zeigler added 26, Levi Tanner put in 15 and Luke McCormick had 14 for the Indians, who were 21 of 36 on foul shots.
The game was tied at 65 at the end of regulation and ultimately became the highest scoring game in MWC history, eclipsing the game won by Sesser-Valier over Johnston City, 100-76, in 1992. Eldorado's 101 points were also a tournament record.
Eldorado will play host to Hamilton County Friday at Duff-Kingston Gymnasium, while Johnston City, which went 1-3 in the tournament, plays at home Friday night against Fairfield in a Black Diamond East game.
