  • Carterville jumped ahead early and held on after a run by Eldorado in the second half, as the Lions downed the Eagles, 55-46, at the West Frankfort Mid-Winter Classic Monday night.
Carterville (8-7) was down 17-15 in the second quarter, but finished the half on a 14-4 run and took a 29-21 halftime lead.
After the Lions went ahead 35-25 in the third quarter, Eldorado (9-12) finished the quarter on an 8-2 run to pull within 37-33 heading into the fourth.
"Everybody makes a run," Carterville coach Scott Burzynski said. "I thought our kids really responded well after Eldorado's run in the third quarter."
Tyler Horn helped Carterville hold off the Eagles down the stretch as he pumped in 10 points in the fourth quarter, en route to his game-high 20 points.
"Tyler wasn't 100 percent because he's been hurt and under the weather but really led us with 20 points and seven rebounds," Burzynski said. "I felt like we also really executed well and were patient on offense at times."
Along with Horn, Carterville got 16 points from Michael Aschemann and 14 from Matt Galik. Eldorado was led by Joel Boulds' 16 points and 14 from Tyler Deaton.
Carterville will play Vienna at 6 p.m. Wednesday, before Eldorado plays West Frankfort at 7:30 p.m.
