Each January the Saline County 4H Federation sponsors a blood drive. Cody McCluskey, 21, Harrisburg, has given blood eight times since he was 17. He has a sister in 4-H.
Danny Evans, 53, Harrisburg has given blood 90 times since he was 17."My mom was a nurse and gave blood over 100 times," said Evans. "My dad did too."
"I have A negative blood, which is one of the rarest. They have a system that helps double the effectiveness of a single donation. By extracting the red cells they create two pints from one. Two people are helped by a single donation," said Evans.
"It used to take only thirty minutes to give blood. But now with all the precautions due to AIDS it takes an hour. But that's no problem. The only side effect I have ever experienced was waking up at night with dry mouth because I was dehydrated."
Nancy Lambert, Saline County Extension Coordinator, said, "We will probably get 20 donors. That's 20 pints and our goal was 15. The donors have to be 18 or older. But 16-year-olds can donate with their parents permission."
Lambert said this morning the total collected was 17 pints.
