  • Simeon “Sim” Pate Jr., 88 of Eldorado passed away Wednesday Jan. 2, 2013, at Ferrell Hospital.
    Simeon was born May 1, 1924, in Irvington to the late Simeon T. Pate and Anna G. (Severs) Pate. On July 31, 1943, he married the former Emily Jean Welch who preceded him in death in June 1999. Simeon was a member of the Eldorado First Methodist Church where he served as treasurer, choir member and past president of the Methodist Men. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1942 to 1945. After returning from service he attended Southern Illinois University in Carbondale from 1946 to 1947, became a bookkeeper in Mt. Vernon from 1947 to 1948.
    In 1948 Simeon joined the U.S. Air Force and served until he retired as a Major in 1965. While he was in the Air Force he obtained a Bachelor of Science Degree and a Master in Business Administration. In 1964 he obtained his Certified Public Accountant Certificate and was employed as a C.P.A. in Centralia, Illinois until 1966.
    From 1966 to 1973 Simeon was Comptroller at Scot Lad Foods in Eldorado. He owned and operated his own C.P.A. Business in Eldorado from 1973 to 1978. From 1978 to 1981 he was employed as a C.P.A. in Belleville. Throughout the 80’s he owned a C.P.A. firm in Belleville. He worked for different law firms in St. Louis, Mo., and Mascouta for Anheuser Busch and he worked at estate planning.
    From 1985 to 1988 he owned and operated a Dairy Queen in Mascoutah. He semi-retired and after his wife’s death in 1999 he sold his home in Belleville and moved back to Eldorado in 2000. After semi-retiring Simeon did accounting work for Sieron and Associates in East St. Louis.
    He was a Life Member of the Eldorado VFW, past president of the Eldorado and East St. Louis Rotary Clubs, a faithful “Friend of the Library” and loved to hunt, fish and golf.
    He is survived by two sons, Simeon T. (Mary) Pate of Eldorado, Tim (Becky) Pate of Granite City; two daughters, Pandy (Jeff) Minor, Teresa (David) Ullman of Carbondale; 14 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and a very special friend Donna Melton of Eldorado.
    In addition to his parents and wife he was preceded in death by a daughter, Tamara J. Knight, and a grandson, Brian M. Pate.
    A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday Jan. 5, 2013, at Colonial Terrace Funeral Home in Eldorado with the Rev. Herb Busche officiating. Visitation will be 9 a.m. to service time Saturday. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Eldorado First United Methodist Church and will be accepted at the funeral home.
