  • It was a bend, but don’t break philosophy for Fairfield in the Consolation Championship game of the Eldorado Holiday Tournament.
On the flip side, when the Eagles needed a stop defensively, it just wasn’t there.
Eldorado fell 82-75 to Fairfield Monday afternoon and watched as the Mules were able to put the game away, shooting 19-of-24 from the foul stripe in the game’s final eight minutes.
“We made some free throws there towards the end,” head coach Scott McElravy said. “We had a lot of guys with four fouls and that’s the first time this season we have had to play defense with that many guys that had that many fouls.”
Eldorado outscored Fairfield 30-26 in the fourth quarter and 45-41 in the second half, but Eldorado head coach T.J. Zurliene said it was the first two quarters where his team dug themselves a hole.
“e got ourselves in a hole early and we didn’t play the best defense in the game,“Zurliene said. “We let them take some easy shots and when you get yourself in a hole like that, it’s hard to comeback. We got back to within five a couple of times, but when you put yourself in a hole like that. It’s hard to do what you really want to do.”
Eldorado was led in scoring by 28 points from 5-foot-10 junior guard Tyler Deaton.
Deaton went 10-of-16 from the floor in the game, including 6-of-8 from the foul line as EHS finished out the EHT going 2-2.
As complimentary as Zurliene has been of Deaton, not only this season, but in the EHT, McElravy showered the junior guard with kind words as well.
“He shot the lights out, he is just good,“ the Fairfield coach said. “He’s had two huge games against us and I don’t know if it’s the gym for those guys or it us, but they shoot the ball well and they are quick. They’re hard to guard and do a good job of getting the ball up and down the floor. I was real proud of our kids in the sense that we bended a little bit, but we didn’t break.”
Joel Boulds and Justin Wiseman each had 14 points for Eldorado, while Dylan Lawrence chipped in with seven and Dylan Roberts, along with Richard Graceffa each put in three points.
Nathaniel Lackey pumped in 20 points for the Mules, while Joseph Rodgers tacked on 16 and Tristan Fry flipped in 13.
Eldorado trailed 21-15 after one quarter of play, turning the ball over five times and did a better job of holding onto the rock in the second quarter, and got to within two points 24-22 after a pair of free throws by Tyler Deaton with 5:29 to play, buut went into the locker room trailing 40-30.
Page 2 of 5 - “Our offense worked well, we just didn’t have it defensively in the first three quarters. That was our main problem,” Zurliene said.
The Eagles’ head coach also noted his team missed 11 layups in the second half.
“Anytime you can go 3-1 at this tournament that is consider a huge success and with such a young team that includes no starters back from last year’s team, I’m pretty happy with that,” McElravy added.
