  • Boys Basketball: Union County, Massac County, West Frankfort all win in moring session at EHT

  • Carrier Mills had Union County on the ropes, but just couldn’t deliver the knockout punch as the Wildcats feel to the No. 4 seeded Braves 59-35 in the opening round of the Eldorado Holiday Tournament Friday morning at Duff-Kingston Gymnasium.
    The Wildcats held a 14-10 advantage with a little under five minutes to play in the second quarter in the first game of the tournament, but Union County went on a 15-2 run to close the quarter and take a 25-16 lead at halftime.
    Carrier Mills was led in scoring by 11 points from Slayden Figg, while Dalton Summers and Cameron Taborn each chipped in with seven points. Darren Betz added six points for the Wildcats, while Josh Bailey and Gabe Motsinger each had two points.
    The Braves were led by Jashaud Fleming and Matt Loxley’s 11 points an Myron Rickerson also finished in double digits, scoring 10 points.
    Union County will take on Massac County Saturday at 1:45 p.m.

    Massac County 61, Hamilton County 33
    Massac County jumped out to an 11-0 lead against Hamilton County in Game 2 of the Holiday Tournament, never looking back in posting a 61-33 victory over the Foxes.
    The No. 5 seeded Patriots were led in scoring by 24 points from Dalton Mitchell, while Hamilton County got a team-high 16 points from Levi Lueke.

    West Frankfort 55, Fairfield 52
    The first upset of the day went to West Frankfort as the Redbirds sent the No. 8 seeded Mules to the consolation bracket thanks to a last-second shot by sophomoe Braxston Koehl.
    The Redbirds trailed 27-16 at halftime, but torched the nets in the second half, outscoring Fairfield 39-25. West Frankfort knocked down six second half 3-pointers and Zach Fort led the Redbirds with 15 points. Trenton Easley and Koehl each had 14 points.
    Fairfield was led in scoring by Nathaniel Lackey’s 16 points.
