Wednesday’s winter storm dumped several inches of snow on southern Illinois and postponed many holiday tournaments throughout the region in the process.
Officials at schools in Benton, Sesser-Valier, Eldorado and Carbondale have moved the start times of the tournaments at their schools to ensure safe travels for participating teams and fans seeking to catch some holiday hoops action.
In Benton, the Benton Rangerette Christmas Classic schedule has been revised. The tournament will tip-off Thursday with just one session.
The annual event was originally scheduled to begin with two sessions Thursday, but now will play just the first session with games at 4 p.m., 5:30 p.m. and 7 p.m.
The tournament will continue Friday and Saturday with two sessions planned for each day.
Eldorado has also been forced to postpone its annual holiday hoops event. The 48th Annual Eldorado Holiday Tournament was set to start Thursday, but now will be played Friday, Saturday and Monday. All game times have been pushed back one day.
The Sesser-Valier Holiday Tournament will also start Thursday and continue Friday, Saturday and Monday. All game times originally planned for Wednesday will be played Thursday. There will be a few changes, though. Christopher and Vienna’s game at 9 a.m. has been moved to 1:30 p.m., when Goreville and Shawnee were supposed to play. That game was cancelled due to travel problems for Shawnee.
Officials in Herrin also postponed their event. The Herrin Holiday Hoops girls basketball tournament has been rescheduled from Wednesday to Thursday.
The tournament will resume Friday and Saturday and finish on Monday.
Teams playing in the Carbondale Holiday Tournament will also have to adjust to new game times.
The tournament has shifted its schedule back a day. Games will now be played Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
As of press time, the Duster Thomas Holiday Hoops Classic in Pinckeyville was still planned to begin Friday.
