  • Wind and cold drove a ceremonial ribbon cutting for the old Missouri Street approach to Harrisburg Medical Center indoors at the hospital Thursday afternoon.
Construction crews raised the level of the road 4 feet to prevent closure during future floods and emergencies.
The project was completed one season ahead of schedule.
Omer Osman, deputy director of highways for Illinois Department of Transportation Region 5 spoke at the ceremony and thanked local officials for their support and cooperation with the project. The street was renamed to honor deceased Hospital Director Vince Ashley. Now known as Vince Ashley Drive the roadway was praised by local officials for providing an added sense of security to the region in times of emergency. The project was funded through a $1 million federal grant administered through IDOT.
Taking advantage of the gathering of local officials, State Senator Gary Forby and representatives of the Operating Engineers Union presented checks totaling $34,000 to local municipalities and to a local scholarship fund.
Rick Hilliard of Marion Local 318 of the union presented the checks to Harrisburg Mayor Eric Gregg and Ridgway Mayor Becky Mitchell. Carrier Mills also received a check as did the Jaylynn Ferrell Scholarship Fund. Jaylynn Ferrell, 22, was the youngest victim of the Feb. 29 tornado.
