  • Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, suburban mayors and mayors of small towns are joining to call for a ban on assault weapons.
At a news conference in Chicago on Thursday with the other mayors, Emanuel said he and other leaders, while supporting tougher gun legislation in Washington, must push state lawmakers to do the same.
Besides the ban on assault weapons, the mayors want a ban on high-capacity ammunition clips like the ones that allowed the man who killed children and teachers last week in Connecticut to fire dozens of shots.
Teresa Kernc (KERNS) says that although there are many avid hunters in Diamond, a small town about 50 miles south of Chicago where she's mayor, this legislation is aimed at guns that are not used for hunting, but for "slaughter."
