  • The Harrisburg High School girls' basketball team matched last year's win total — through the teams' first eight games of the season — with a 65-58 overtime victory at Carterville Monday night.
The Bulldogs remain undefeated at 8-0 and will travel to Herrin tonight (Tuesday) followed by a home game against Massac County on Thursday and a Saturday matinee contest at Davenport with Hamilton County.
Ashley Ferrell led Harrisburg with 21 points, including a pair of pressure free throws with eight seconds left that gave the Bulldogs a 55-53 lead.
Shelby Boer tossed in 17 points, while Lindsey Murray also finished in double figures with 15 points.
Devan Jones had six points, while Whitney Younger had five points and Hanna Jones had a free throw.
Harrisburg held a three point lead with under a minute to go and had the ball. An illegal screen was called gave the ball back to Carterville.
The Lions came down after a timeout and hit a game-tying 3-pointer with 20 seconds left.
"It was the same play that got us last year, in the same situation," Harrisburg head coach Jake Stewart said. "I thought we defended it well, the girl just made the shot."
Ferrell was then fouled with just eight seconds to play and made both her free throws.
Carterville then scored on a running layup as time expired to force overtime.
In the extra session, Harrisburg outscored the Lions 10-3 and was up by two points with 30 seconds left in OT when Devan Jones pulled down a rebound off a missed free throw and made the outback to seal the game.
"That play might have been the play of the game," Stewart said. "Devan was just playing hard and made a huge play when we needed it most.
" Ashely, Lindsey, and Shelby do a great job of scoring the basketball. We also have players like Hanna, Malayna, Devin, and Whitney who do the little things that make our team complete."
