  • For the first time Saturday night, Harrisburg closed out a contest with it's starting five on the floor.
What wasn't a first for the Bulldogs was a victory.
Harrisburg improved to 7-0 with a battle-tested 62-53 victory over Alton Marquette Saturday night at the SIU Shootoout at the Arena.
Harrisburg weathered the storm against the Explorers, who went 3-of-10 from the foul stripe in the fourth quarter and nearly a two minute stretch where Alton Marquette (6-2) didn't score, all the while Harrisburg's Tyler Smithpeters went 9-of-10 from the charity line, finishing with a game-high 26 points to lead the Bulldogs to victory.
It was that type of weathering the storm that Harrisburg head coach Randy Smithpeters knew his club would have to do against one of the Metro East's best 3A teams.
When asked whether the long time Bulldog coach felt like it was a good win or a great win, Smithpeters was quick with a response.
"It was a great win, against a really great team," he said. "We came over here to learn thing and to play this type of competition to make us better. There's no question this made us better, it pointed out some of the problems that we have that we need to work out to make us better.
"We talked about good times and bad times. We started off on a good time and we knew playing a good team we would have to experience both. I think we did experience both, about a 50-50 to be honest with you. We never had a comfortable lead. They were always right there and sometimes we struggled to just not get behind."
Harrisburg's biggest lead of the night was 30-20 on a night where the score was tied five times and there were two lead changes.
When asked to elaborate on just what his team had learned, Smithpeters said his guys handled a lot of tough situations against a really good team.
"Our offense went a little stagnate when we got tired and I knew we would get tired, but we have to learn to handle it better," Smithpeters added. "It's something that we've worked on the last couple of days, but (today) Saturday it just pointed it out a little more because of the competition that we played against.
After Smithpeters' 26 points, Capel Henshaw, Ryne Roper and Eli Taborn-Scott all finished with nine points.
Bahari Amaya came off the bench to score seven points, while Snjolfur "Snowy" Bjornsson tacked on two points.
Harrisburg finished shooting 41 percent from the floor in the game, going 16-of-39 and holding Alton Marquette to 35 percent on 20-of-57.
Harrisburg was outrebounded for the first time this season 37-41 and turned the ball over 12 times to the Explorers' nine, but finished off going 22-for-32 from the foul line for 68 percent, while Marquette finished 7-for-17.
Page 2 of 5 - Smithpeters chalks up the victory to team defense, but added, game's like Saturday are why his team is playing in marquee matchups like the one at the SIU Arena.
"It's why we're here. It's why we went to Marshall County and why we're going to Memphis (The Penny Hardaway Shootout at Dyer County). This is a team that was 26-3 last season and I don't think there is any question about what kind of talent they have, they have 'basketball players'.
"We battled, handled a lot of tough situations and beat a very good team."
On Friday night, Harrisburg knocked off Murphysboro 74-43, where Tyler Smithpeters scored a game-high 24 points, while three other Bulldogs reached double figures.
Taborn-Scott tacked on 15, while Henshaw chipped in with 11 for a Bulldog ballclub that got off to a 1-0 start in the Southern Illinois River-to-River Conference, Ohio Division and won their 15 straight at Davenport Gymnasium.
Coincidentally, the last loss at Davenport came to Murphysboro during the 2010-2011 season at the IHSA Class 2A Sectional Championship.
