A manhunt for two persons of interest in a shooting in Johnson County has ended peacefully. Late Wednesday, Dec. 5, John L. Cunningham, 41, and his wife, Janet S. Cunningham, 43, were taken into custody without incident by Kentucky State Police and U.S. Marshals near Madisonville, Ky. The two were thought to be armed and dangerous and had alerted all of Southern Illinois to be on the lookout for the pair.
After an extensive manhunt began late Monday leading police to locations in Illinois, Indiana and Kentucky, the couple was found sleeping in a stolen pickup truck at a truck stop near Madisonville. The Cunninghams fled southern Illinois Monday night after a male victim was shot during an incident in Johnson County. The victim has since been treated and released from the hospital. The Cunninghams, both convicted felons, are persons of interest in the shooting and are being held on Johnson County charges of aggravated vehicular hijacking, aggravated battery with a firearm and unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon.
Additional charges are anticipated.
