  • The Harrisburg girls' basketball team is off the school's second best start in history at 7-0 after a 72-57 win over Du Quoin Thursday night at Davenport Gymnasium.
Junior point guard Lindsey Murray had a game-high 18 points for the Bulldogs, knocking down three 3-pointers, while fellow classmate and guard Ashley Ferrell added 18 points.
In the first quarter, Harrisburg built a quick 10-2 lead, but just as quickly saw it disappear as Du Quoin cut into the deficit to trail 17-15 at the end of the one quarter.
The Bulldogs led 34-30 at halftime, despite playing with foul trouble in the first half as both Murray and Shelby Boer had three fouls.
Harrisburg put the game away in the third quarter and led by as many as 24 points in the fourth.
"We survived the first half, but got into fouled trouble and gave up too many points," head coach Jake Stewart said. "I thought Hanna (Jones), Devan (Jones), and Shelby did a good job of containing the Maddox girl."
Also contributing for Harrisburg Thursday night was Malayna Douglas and Kelsey Hobbs with eight points. Boer finished with seven points, while Alexa Burtis tacked on six points and Devan Jones had five points.
The Harrisburg junior varsity club improved to 3-0 on the year with a 53-20 win over Du Quoin.
Burtis led all scorers with 21 points, while Hannah Walker added eight points. Hayley Thompson, Kaitlyn Hutchison and Lilee Robinson all scored six points. Kaytlyn Keith tacked on three points, while Kelsey Hobbs scored two and Brittany Reynolds had a free throw.
