  • Inspired by a food collection project of Land Street Missionary Baptist Church in Harrisburg, Galatia seventh-grader Deanna Whitlock, 12, decided to solicit food for the less fortunate for Thanksgiving.
“My grandma said it would be a good idea to put a food box at school. I told Mr. Cummins and he said I could,” Whitlock said.
Her grandma is Shelby Whitlock and Mr. Cummins is Galatia Junior High/High School Principal John Cummins. What no one expected the strong cooperation of the students and their families.
“We took two boxes to the food pantry so far,” Whitlock said.
The Galatia office of the Christian Community Compassion Center received the two boxes of mainly canned goods to supplement its Thanksgiving food distribution program, but the spirit of giving did not end with the holiday.
“We’ve been talking that we might keep it through December,” Whitlock said.
    “Hunger doesn’t end after Thanksgiving.”
Cummins is proud to see the young people take on the project and that his school could serve as a collection point.
“We were happy to accommodate,” Cummins said.
And for the kids, some have learned how giving can be a pleasurable thing.
“It makes me feel really good,” Whitlock said.
