  • The 52nd Annual Pope County Deer Festival is underway in Golconda with big plans for the 2 p.m. Saturday parade.
“Usually we have somewhere around 70. The last thing I saw was eight bands and 60 entrants,” Mark Aly, member of the sponsoring Golconda Rotary Club, said.
At 7 a.m. Golconda’s main street will shut down as the organizers start numbering where all participants will be and Cornbread Junction will entertain at 12:30 p.m.
The festival is a celebration of Pope County, it’s residents and it’s visitors who come to hunt its prized whitetail deer.
“To me it’s a community homecoming. Families get back together, it’s deer season, it’s kind of a tradition,” Aly said.
The Crim — as always — has been providing great barbecue since the festival began Wednesday.
The Deer Queen contest is today with the 17 entrants doing personal interviews with judges and presenting themselves on stage in casual wear and formal wear tonight.
