The Southeastern Illinois College Heritage Festival will be held Nov. 3 and 4 this year and with around 120 vendors, the event is expected to draw large numbers of Christmas shoppers again this year.
The event will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.
Billed as Saline County's premiere craft festival of homemade or homegrown items, the Heritage Festival is a great way to kick off the holiday shopping season.
Organizer Donna Hearn said the booths are filled up and she is expecting to see an even larger variety of goods than ever before.
"There will be lots of good homemade candies, vintage baby clothes, jewelry, bows, vintage purses and Christmas items," Hearn said.
A few vendors will also be demonstrating how their art is made, including a spinner and a potter. Basket-makers will also be showing off their skills by doing basket-weaving demonstrations.
Hearn said performances by the Patrice Heiken Puppets of Evansville, Ind., which tend to be a big hit among the kids, are set for 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Saturday. The Heiken Puppets have been in business for over 50 years, traveling and performing for children and their families. The show is a part of SIC's Cultural Arts Series.
In addition, the Harrisburg Middle School Band will be performing 2 p.m. Sunday at the festival. All performances will be held in the college's Student Center in the Harry L. Crisp Conference Center in B building.
The Falcon Pointe Bistro will serve complete dinners, soup, salads, sandwiches, and desserts. Other food includes spiced nuts, kettle corn, "fair foods" and homemade candies.
One of the busiest booths at last year's event was hosted by local Amish families, who sold delicious baked goods, among other items. Like last year, their booths will only be open Saturday, so interested shoppers better hurry in Saturday morning to get their choice of fresh, homemade goodies.
"This is the largest number of vendors in my 12-year history with the festival," Hearn said.
