HEROD - A 21-year-old Elizabethtown man died after a head-on collision with a semi-tractor trailer at the state Route 34 “S” curves north of Herod late Friday afternoon.
Coroner Mark Aly said Lawrence Frederick Thornton III, 21, Elizabethtown was passing a vehicle on the curve with a semi tractor-trailer driven by Bradley Walker, 37, Harrisburg, approaching driving north.
Aly said Walker had tried to avoid Thornton, but a guardrail prevented him from leaving the roadway.
Aly pronounced Thornton dead shortly after 5 p.m. at the scene after Pope County firefighters extricated him from the vehicle.
Walker was taken to Harrisburg Medical Center for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.
Thornton was a police dispatcher for Hardin County Sheriff’s Department, a medic for the Illinois National Guard in Marion, a volunteer firefighter for Elizabethtown and a nursing student at Southeastern Illinois College.
He is survived by two sons, Braden Thornton, Elizabethtown, and Migel Gomez of Herrin, five brothers and his parents, Lawrence Frederick Thornton Jr. and Rachel (Spurr) Thornton, according to obituary information from Hardin County Funeral Services.
A memorial service is 1 p.m. at Hardin County Funeral Services, Cox Funeral Home 1 p.m. Tuesday with visitation 10 a.m. until service time.
