  • Spicy chili and heated competition are in store for those attending or competing in the 16th Annual Chili Cook-off hosted by the Harrisburg Elks Lodge. The event will last most of the day Saturday, beginning as early as 7:30 a.m. for participating teams.
A dozen teams have already registered to compete in the cook-off, but the Elks will continue to accept new competitors right up until sign-in time at 8 a.m. Saturday at the lodge, located at  202 N. Vine St. in Harrisburg. There is an $85 entry fee per team, each of which will be allowed up to four members, in addition to no more than 10 support team members.
After some time for preparation, cooking will begin at noon and end promptly at 3 p.m. Though other food and drinks will be available for purchase throughout the day, attendees will be able to start sampling the varieties of chili at the close of the cooking time. There is a $5 entry fee for those who attend the cook-off but do not compete.
After judges announce the winning teams, who have the opportunity to walk away with a $300 cash prize for first place, the southern rock group All Roostered Up will perform at the lodge from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Chili will be judged based on good flavoring and chili pepper taste, texture of the meat, consistency of the aroma and the blend of spices and color. Teams will also have the chance to compete for the best booth award and the best support group award.
A "people's choice" award will be given out to the team that sells the most $1 sample cups to attendees. Proceeds from this year's chili cook-off will benefit the Arthritis Foundation, in addition to the Harrisburg Elks Lodge.
For more information and for the complete set of official rules and cooking regulations, the Elks Lodge can be contacted at (618) 252-5000.
