The Burg Comics Annual Convention brings “geek chic” to Harrisburg for the third year 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday at the SIC Foundation Building.
The event is small compared to comic cons in St. Louis, Mo., and Louisville, Ky., but brings together regional fans of the genre to celebrate the capes, masks and heroic deeds of their childhood idols. The event is growing exponentially.
“We doubled attendance from the first year to the second and we are hoping a couple hundred people will be coming through this year,” organizer Scott Reed said.
There will 15 vendors of comics, toys and crafts utilizing over 40 tables.
This year adds a costume contest.
“That’s something we are trying new this year. Typically at conventions there are people that come in costume,” Reed said.
The costume contest check-in and photos begin at 2 p.m. and the winners will be announced at 3:30 p.m. There will be winners in two categories — birth to 13 years old and adult. Winners will receive a prize.
There will be locals artists like Wil-Woods who does commission are and will have prints available for purchase. The Pixel Peddler makes magnet and framed artwork out of beads. Fuzz Wuzzies Hats makes custom fleece hats and other crafts. Brasier76 Studios who paints Jason Vorhees masks.
Local comic book artists Jared DeNeal and Damian Milligan will have a booth representing their “The Nobodies” comic book.
Harrisburg native Nathan Bonner will have his independently published comic books and art for sale.
Castle Perilous Games & Books of Carbondale have a booth to sell table top games, gaming supplies, comics and more.
Reed’s own Burg Comics will have a booth selling comics and HeroClix games, Reed’s project he supports through his day job as teacher in the college’s information technology program.
There will also be games happening throughout the day.
Reed said the convention lacks the population base for a large, highly organized convention, but it does create a unique event for fans in the area.
“We’re just not the size. It’s much more of a social event,” Reed said.
