  • A single-vehicle wreck involving a semi tractor-trailer that occurred just after 5:30 p.m. Tuesday evening on state Route 13 near Equality led to the death of driver Thomas E. Neumann, 46, of Cave-In-Rock.
According to a prepared release by the Illinois State Police District 19, a preliminary investigation into the crash has shown Neumann was suffering from an unknown medical issue that caused him to lose control of the vehicle, crossing the center line into the eastbound lane of traffic and then veering off the south side of the road.
The truck traveled a few hundred feet before striking a ditch about 30 feet south of the roadway. The vehicle then continued several hundred feet westbound next to the highway before finally coming to a stop, according to the release. The semi tractor-trailer sustained minor damage from the crash.
Motorists immediately came to Neumann's aid and discovered he was suffering from medical trauma unrelated to the wreck. According to the release, his condition required cardiopulmonary resuscitation and he was treated at the scene by personnel from the Gallatin County Ambulance Service.
Neumann was then transported to Harrisburg Medical Center for further treatment. He was later declared deceased at the hospital at approximately 6 p.m.
The Saline County Coroner's Office will be investigating the cause of Neumann's death.
Other agencies that assisted at the crash scene were the Gallatin County Sheriff's Office and the Equality Police Department. No charges were filed.
