CHESTER - It would be easy to make the comparisons to Chester being much like their cartoon hero, Popeye, in the fact that CHS ate some spinach and was strong to the finish in their 51-13 victory over Eldorado Friday night.
The fact of the matter is the Yellow Jackets didn't just sting the Eagles, but dominated Eldorado in the ground game, mucking up 483 yards to Eldorado's 144 in the mud and rain as Chester clinched the Black Diamond Conference to remain perfect on the season, improving to 7-0.
Eldorado, now 4-3, have two games remaining on its slate and need at least one more win, against either Vienna-Goreville or Sesser-Valier-Waltonville-Woodlawn to become playoff eligible.
While panic hasn't struck the nerve of head coach Brandon Hampton just yet, there were some unsettling things the fifth-year head coach saw at W.O. Smith Field.
"It was nasty field position for us almost all night," Hampton said. "It became a battle of who could limit the center-quaterback exchange and the turnover battle there. It got the best of us (Friday), but the reality is this, Chester out played us, they were the better team coming in (record wise) and unfortunately when you're the underdog, you've got to do a really good job of controlling the football and limiting the big plays."
The big play is ultimately what got the best of the Eagles Friday night as Chester got a second quarter touchdown by Stephen Roth for 34 yards and a 54-yard TD run by Joel Clendenin in the third quarter.
Clendenin did the most damage for the Yellow Jackets, rushing for 204 yards on 18 carries and finishing with four touchdowns.
Of the 144 yards Eldorado had on the ground, 81 of it came off one run by Tyler Deaton as he broke free from the right side and busted loose down the Chester sideline en route to a first quarter touchdown.
The score made it 7-6, but the Yellow Jackets would go on to score 34 unanswered points en route to the win.
The only other touchdown for Eldorado came a little more than midway in the fourth quarter when defensive lineman Justin Wiseman picked off a Chester interception and rumbled down the field for a 65-yard score.
Eldorado will now set its sights on the final two regular season games of the season, both at Boz-Adams field where they will take on a pair of teams with a combined record of 9-6.
Vienna-Goreville became playoff eligible with a weekend win over Christopher-Zeigler-Royalton and S-V-W-W (4-3) knocked off Carmi-White County Friday night 20-6 and is on a three-game winning streak.
