  • You'll have to forgive Ashton and Taylor Goodley for that awkward pause that was felt around the scoring tent Wednesday at the IHSA Class A girls' golf regional at Union County Country Club in Anna-Jonesboro.
The two Eldorado sophomores both posted a pair of 76's, but little did they know what was about to ensure.
Not only were the two 76's good enough for first place among the 12 teams that teed it up, but the two teammates and twin sisters had to grab their bags and make their way to the first tee for a playoff.
The two made par's on the par-4, 1st, which extended the playoff to the second hole where Taylor came away with a par and Aston bogeyed, giving Taylor the top spot in the overall standings.
"The course played very difficult today with a majority of the scores falling in the 100+ range," head coach Greg Goodley said. "I thought Ashton and Taylor played very solid and more importantly kept their focus throughout the day."
By virtue of Ashton and Taylor finishing one and two, respectively, the Eldorado girls as a whole get another shot at state tournament glory by qualifying for next week's sectional in Efffingham.
"I'm looking for some improved scores from the other members of the team," Goodley said.
Taylor Aldridge finished with a 107, while Charlie Lowry wasn't far behind with a 111. Sam Mings carded a 115 and Ashton Unthank closed things out with a 116.
Massac County High School won the overall team title, shooting a 350, while Eldorado shot a 370. Herrin High School took third place with a 420.
Harrisburg's Alexa Burtis won a playoff for the 10th and final spot, also qualifying for next week's sectional, as she shot a 109.
For the Bulldogs, Alexa Burtis shot a 109, while Meridith Wolf, Gabriella Tison and Skylar Street all shot a 124. Collins Lambert carded a 140 and Hannah Robinson shot a 153.
The Bulldog girls finished eighth out of 12 teams with a 481.
