  • The Harrisburg High School boys' soccer team went 1-2 over the weekend to start their season at the Metro East Cup at Metro-East Lutheran.
The Bulldogs' lone win came against Trenton Wesclin, where Afernee Houston had two goals en route to a 2-1 overtime victory.
"Both teams passed the ball well with possession switching often," head coach Mike Stewart said. "Our defense was able to hold off their attack, except for in that 17th minute when they took advantage of one of our mistakes in the backfield resulting in a break away goal."
That goal was the first of the game and put the Warriors on top 1-0, but fresh legs saved Harrisburg as Houston, a freshman, answered in the 26th minute with a game-tying goal.
Houston then scored the game's winning goal in overtime as he converted on a pass from Brandon Duffield.
"Afernee earned his stripes today," Stewart added. "I was very proud of him and his play today. I thought all the young men stepped up to play their game today. This is the type of play we have been working on and I am very pleased with our performance."
Jacob Oldani got the save in goal for Harrisburg as he and teammate Ryan Cowsert combined to make five saves. The Bulldogs had eight shots on goal.
Harrisburg's other two games resulted in losses, one was a 5-0 blanking by Bethalto Civic Memorial High School.
Harrisburg had six shots on goal as Houston put up three, Dylan T. Butler, Dylan J. Butler and Chad Barger had the other three.
Harrisburg lost 4-0 to Freeburg where Cowsert made eight saves in goal.
The Bulldogs return to the field Tuesday when they travel to Anna-Jonesboro for a 4 p.m. game.
