  • Nicole, Kayla and Krista Mayberry took home handfuls of blue ribbons after the 4-H dairy goat competition at the Saline County Fair Tuesday morning. Sixteen-year-old Kayla won the overall breeding champion award for her milk goat project and her sister Nicole, 18, received reserve champion  for her dairy goat.
Kayla said her grandmother has a farm, so she and her sisters have grown up around goats and have been involved in 4-H most of their lives.
There were several competitive events involving dairy goats at the fairground Tuesday, but showmanship was a big part of all of them. The girls had to lead their goats around the arena and be able to answer basic questions about their goats asked by the judge.
Britney Beck, of Carbondale, judged the goat competitions.
Kayla said she's been involved in 4-H events for so long the competition hardly phases her.
“I don't get nervous anymore,” she said.
