  • NOTE: This event has been cancelled due to dry, hot, dangerous weather, according to Equality Fire Chief Tony Lloyd. The village hopes to hold the Firecracker Festival later when conditions are more safe.
It's going to be a hot time in the village of Equality Saturday as the community celebrates Independence Day early with a Firecracker Festival at Cardinal Park. Forecast highs predict a scorching 106 degrees.
Despite the drought conditions and burn bans in neighboring counties Equality Fire Chief Preston Beaver confirmed Wednesday the fireworks would go forward.
A full schedule of events are planned.
"What we've got set up is a pretty full day," said Tony Lloyd, the village's police chief and one of the festival organizers.
The day starts with a biscuits and gravy, eggs, bacon and sausage breakfast at the Equality Masonic Lodge from 6 to 10 a.m. and a 5K walk/run from 8 a.m. and a sand volley tournament at 9 a.m. Registration for both events opens 30 minutes before the start.
The gates open for the festival at 1 p.m. at the park. Offerings include a corn hole tournament, petting zoo, a pre-magic show and raffles in addition to bouncy houses, face painting, train rides, carnival games, a dunking booth, food and refreshments.
From 4 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. there will be drunk driving/simulator car demos, and the cake walk begins at 5 p.m. The flag presentation will take place at 6 p.m.
There will be a Big Wheel race on the basketball court at 7 p.m. and a magic show featuring "The Mountain Man" at 8 p.m.
    Fireworks will begin at dusk.
